The Truth About Trapping:

1.     Question must be asked -Is TRAPPING humane?

Answer is: NO. Whether leg trap or snare, Trapping is VERY cruel. This crushing fact becomes apparent as one researches and sees the visual abuse, torture and death animals suffer through photos videos and eye witness accounts. Snare traps is a most violent method used to kill an animal. Traps are non-selective so not only Wolves but other animals including birds, dogs and cats are also captured by snare traps, suffer and die a slow death.

Snaring is a primitive, archaic, and torturous method of killing animals.

Although snares are intended to kill the animals quickly, once snared around the neck, wolves can still live for up to two days, and in some cases beyond. Snares do not have the ability to quickly render wolves unconscious. Less than 50% of canids (wolves and coyotes) captured by the neck in killing neck snares lose consciousness within five minutes; death may come after hours or days, depending on the killing efficacy of the snare and the frequency of visits by trappers.

Unable to free themselves, the noose slowly cuts off blood circulation from wolf’s head to their heart; meanwhile, the carotid artery keeps pumping blood into the brain. Then the brain swells up until the wolf’s head explodes. Trappers refer these swollen heads as “jelly heads.”

If a wolf escapes, they’re still with the snare around their neck. All the while, the snare keeps slowly tightening, working its way through the hide and the flesh of the wolf.

The use of a snare trap is the most violent method used to kill an animal.

The statement below comes from what the American Veterinary Medical Association about leg traps:

“Leg hold traps have been banned in 88 countries. In spite of irrefutable evidence of cruelty, mutilation and dangers to non-target animals and children; they have only been banned in 8 states. As the numbers grow, over 75% of Americans oppose the leg hold trap, yet Congress has not banned them thanks to the fur industry and lobbies like the AVMA.  In the up to 3 days it may take for a trapper to return, an animal may suffer or die of dehydration, blood loss, hypothermia, trap inflicted injuries or predators. A study of coyotes trapped in padded leg hold traps found that 97% experienced severe leg swelling and 26% lacerations and fractures. A study of 55 red foxes found that 25 suffered severe swelling; 23 severe lacerations; 17 fractured their teeth and 13 suffered severed tendons, abrasions or fractures. “Drowning sets” are designed to kill beaver, muskrat and mink. Animals in these traps struggle for an average of 9 1/2 minutes. A beaver may hold out as long as 20 minutes.”

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is a professional association and industry lobbying organization for veterinarians and affiliated industries in animal commerce and agriculture.

Snare traps are designed to catch an animal by the neck and strangle them.

 Quote from a Minnesota trapper:

“When an animal is caught in a snare, it’s natural for it to lunge forward, and keep lunging,” said. “When it does, the snare draws tighter.”

Wolves a once endangered species are now valuable commodity for their fur or their trophy status. In

Anyone who uses snare traps are capable to commit violent methods of any sorts to kill animals.

Is this okay with you? To continue this barbaric terrorism towards Wildlife? It is immoral and unethical violence towards a once endangered species.

Fur trapping might seem like a page from the past, a reminder of the days of Daniel Boone and coonskin caps. And in most of the world, it is. Among the few nations where it occurs, none is more important than the United States. Every year, 150,000 trappers here in the U.S. capture and kill over 7 million wild animals, more than any nation on earth.

In all, more than 20 species are targeted for their fur, from foxes to raccoons, coyotes to river otters. The traps and snares are non selective. Too often not only targeted wildlife are killed but birds such as Eagles, Hawks and other species. Many dogs and even cats are caught and killed by Traps.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP STOP THE USE OF TRAPS AND SNARES IN THE U.S.

1. Never buy fur or fur trim.

2. Write a polite letter or email to your COUNTY COMISSIONERS, STATE AND FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVES to pass laws that ban traps and snares from your region and state.
